Mary McCullah
Born in Missouri and living throughout the US, Mary McCullah has worked closely with zoos and nature preserves giving conservation related programs and doing hands-on work with animals including gray wolves and birds of prey. These experiences have provided valuable inspiration for her art work.
The award winning artist paints primarily in acrylic and watercolor concentrating mostly on nature and wildlife as subject matter. Mary is attracted by the fluid movement of watercolor and the versatility of acrylic. She works from her own reference photographs, often combining several photos.
Mary and her husband retired to North Augusta, SC in 2006. At that time the artist was still traveling throughout the country teaching seminars and working as an independent contractor for well-known paint and brush companies. Although holding a degree in journalism from the University of Missouri, the artist has been painting for 40 years, 25 of those spent teaching and designing educational material.
In addition, she began a new adventure in the equine world and decided to retire from travel teaching to spend more time in her new South Carolina home with her horses and to focus more on exhibiting, selling and commission work. The artist’s work can be found in private and corporate collections throughout the US and in Canada. Mary has been involved with the SC State Parks Artist in Residence program for two years and has exhibited throughout the area including four solo shows and receiving numerous awards at area shows.
In December of 2021, the artist and her husband moved to Mills River, NC. Now living in the mountain area of the High Vista community, Mary is delighted with her new studio with mountain view in winter and "tree house" feel in summer. "I look forward to this adventure and connecting with a new art community!"
“In our busy lives we so often are unable to see the beauty that surrounds us in the natural world. We neither listen, or smell or feel the call of the hawk, the sweet scent of wild flowers in the breeze, or the soft moss on the forest floor."
The artist continues to seek new experiences through workshops and emerging products. "I want to continue searching for new techniques and methods of expressing my love of the natural world through the visual arts. One never stops learning! Enjoy--I hope my work will bring a smile, retrieve a memory, or create a desire to see what the natural world holds for you.
