About Mary McCullah
"As an artist I have always hoped to touch the heart of the viewer with a smile, a memory, a desire to know the spirit of a creature and the beauty of the natural world." Mary has been painting for over 40 years dedicating over 25 of those years to teaching and designing educational material working as an independent contractor for major paint and brush companies. Her work is included in private and corporate collections in the US and Canada.
The award winning artist enjoyed her first solo show in 2010, followed by more in 2013 and 2017. The 2013, exhibit, "Diversity" highlighted her experiences as an artist in residence at SC state parks. Mary has received numerous awards including first places and best of show in local competitive exhibits.
"I was born in Missouri and have lived in 13 states, We selected SC for our retirement. Now I have time to return to more work in watercolor, but not forsaking my acrylic and oil roots. The fluid movement of watercolor is challenging and rewarding and the versatility of acrylic is exciting." Mary still teaches an occasional class and enjoys demonstrating and giving artist talks in addition to accepting commission work.
For many years Mary volunteered at zoos and nature preserves from Illinois to Pennsylvania to Tennessee. This gave her the opportunity to work hands on with a pack of gray wolves and present conservation education programs. In 1998, she helped design, build, and manage an educational raptor center for non-releasable birds of prey. "These experiences solidified my childhood connection with nature and provided me with endless visual and emotional images."
Mary works mostly from photographs often combining one or more photos. "I love my light-filled studio. Upon moving to SC I brought my very first horse with me and then one became two. Sadly, I now am back to one beautiful horse. Often the paint brush must play second to the grooming brush!"
"I want to continue searching for new techniques and methods of expressing my love of nature through the visual arts. One never stops learning!"
