This barn owl is painted in acrylic on panel and features a "faux" painted mat using artist's own photo references. I find great pleasure in taking creatures that live in captivity and returning them to their natural environment. When I was working at Bays Mountain in TN, we acquired, Rusty, a gorgeous barn owl from another educational center. Rusty had been a free flying star in educational programs but with age he had begun to loose his eyesight. A barn owl can find a mouse in a totally dark barn by sound alone. So, we gave Rusty the opportunity to continue to fly glove to glove in silent flight by using old fashion clicker in our hands. After some trial and error he was successful and for a short time was once more a flying education ambassador. Framed with soft rustic gray.
Born in Missouri and living throughout the US, Mary McCullah has worked closely with zoos and nature preserves giving conservation related programs and doing hands-on work with animals including gray wolves and birds of prey. These experiences have provided valuable inspiration for her art work. The award winning artist paints primarily in acrylic and watercolor concentrating mostly on nature and wildlife as subject matter. Mary is attracted by the fluid movement of watercolor and the versatility of acrylic. She works from her own reference photographs, often combining several photos.
