Acrylic on 18 x 24 gallery wrapped canvas painted from artist's own photo references. This is "Blanco", an immature red-tailed hawk. Blanco was injured and although all efforts were made to rehabilitate him, he was unable to return to the wild. He became an education ambassador for a raptor center where I volunteered. His light coloring was unusual but as he began to molt a "red" tail began to develop and he developed a more buff coloring. The sky photo was taken in SC from the pasture where my horses were turned out. I thought Blanco had earned his return to a wild setting.
Born in Missouri and living throughout the US, Mary McCullah has worked closely with zoos and nature preserves giving conservation related programs and doing hands-on work with animals including gray wolves and birds of prey. These experiences have provided valuable inspiration for her art work. The award winning artist paints primarily in acrylic and watercolor concentrating mostly on nature and wildlife as subject matter. Mary is attracted by the fluid movement of watercolor and the versatility of acrylic. She works from her own reference photographs, often combining several photos.
